2 Live Crew was originally made up of DJ Mr. Mixx (David Hobbs) and Amazing Vee (Yuri Vielot) in addition to Won. Eventually, Luke Skyywalker (Luther Campbell) joined on as lead vocalist. The group got their start in the 1980s, but it was their controversial album As Nasty As They Wanna Be that gained them fame.
The album was incredibly explicit, and 2 Live Crew gained the attention of the Supreme Court for performing “obscene” music. Ultimately, the case led to the creation of the “Parental Advisory” sticker that now appears on explicit albums.
In 2014, Won spoke about the music in an interview. He said 2 Live Crew “knew that there’s value to our music even though it’s not what [the authorities] wanted it to be. Our music is party music told in the way that guys and females talk behind closed doors. It’s locker room talk, and we knew it was protected under the First Amendment.”
Campbell, for one, is mourning the loss of Christopher Wong Won and his innovative spirit.

Won’s agent, DJ DBo, explained that the rapper had been dealing with some health issues lately. However, he didn’t go into detail.
Many fans and other artists alike are paying tribute to the pioneer of free speech.
