Just over a year ago, Gomez revealed that she has been battling with lupus, an autoimmune disease that can damage various parts of the body. She’s even gone through chemotherapy treatments to help with facing the disease.
Now, however, it’s affecting her in a new way: through anxiety and depression. In a statement to People, she revealed that she’d be stepping out for a while to get a handle on these new issues.
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” she said. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
She added that fans continue to be her focus, but that she needs to think more long-term.
“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” she added. “Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
A lot of singers and performers can end up running themselves into the ground or turning to unhealthy means to cope with the pressures they’re facing, so it’s great to see her taking care of herself. It’s got to be hard to take a step back from what you love, but sometimes that’s exactly what needs to be done.
Wishing Selena Gomez a happy and healthy vacation!
