The suspect was a 21-year-old man Kevin Loibl, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was in possession of two handguns and a hunting knife. He approached Grimmie and open fired before Grimmie’s 22-year-old brother tackled the him to the ground. Loibl then turned the gun on himself, and he died at the scene.
Grimmie was evacuated to a hospital where she was in critical condition. She passed away early Saturday morning because of her injuries.
Police Chief John Mina said the situation seems to point towards Loibl being a deranged fan since nothing indicated that he and Grimmie knew each other.
“That’d be speculation, but that’s what it’s looking like. We believe he came here to commit this crime,” said Mina.
There were no metal detectors at the signing, and the security guards assigned to the event were unarmed.
